I’ve joined the slice of life challenge again for the month of March! I’ll do my best to try to blog everyday! I hope you’ll consider joining as well. š
Slice of Life Challenge Entry #1
the cream cheese stands alone
i bought you over two weeks ago
excited to find you in a shelf in costco
imagining the possibilities:
whipping up a batch of cream cheese frosting for my red velvet cupcakes
so wanting to be eaten
yet, three weeks have passed, and you are in the same spot
a little bit older, closer to becoming full of mold
life happened
an unexpected death, a proposal, and new responsibilities
and you remain alone and untouched
i’m sorry
Awhile ago (a long while ago) I thought that the expiration date on the bottom of the cream cheese package meant that it would stay good ’til that date even if it were opened. One call to Philadelphia later, I found out it’s only guaranteed for 10 days after opening. That being said, customer service treated me graciously and I’ve never made that mistake again.
Great to see you for the March Challenge Jee Young!
Your post cracks me up. Totally something I would do too!
i love this. this is how i feel so often. life happens.
You have Costco?!?!?! That is utterly unfair – I do declare.
Yes, there are a few Costco’s here in Seoul. It’s a bit more expensive then in the states, but totally worth it!!!
You win the award today for “best post title of the day” — How could I pass up a title like that? Thanks for bringing us into the life and death of cream cheese (and cupcakes!), and the unexpected twists of life.
Kevin
Thanks!!! Glad you liked the title and the post. š
Your post made me laugh. I have a carton of ricotta in my fridge. Bought it at Sam’s club a month ago. Really was going to do homemade lasagnaā¦
Hilarious! It’s like you crawled right into my fridge.
Too funny! I must confess, I buy it up when it is on sale in December but don’t use it until months later. It always looks and tastes okay, but it was unopened. So give it a chance.
Really?? Then, I may try to make my cream cheese frosting after all! š
You made me smile!
really cute post, I’m famous for using the ‘expired’ and not even caring:)
In my house, I am infamous for buying items I fantasize whipping up delicious things with, but life seems to happen a lot to me; these products are often left in the fridge to stand alone : /
Jee, this is so funny. I’m going to put it in my William Carlos Williams apology poem file. This just reminded me so much of his poem! Glad you’re slicing again this year!
Wow…I’m flattered that you will include this in your WCW poem file!! Thanks!
That title takes the cake (or cupcake!).
It is true life happens even to cream cheese. I laughed out loud as I sat at my desk taking a break from the work of the day…and then I paused at what does happen in life–the sorrow, joys, and duties of being human. Thanks!
I’m glad my slice made you laugh! Laughter is sometimes the best medicine. š
I agree with Kevin; I enjoyed the creativity of your post!
Are you going from the old rhyme “the cheese stands along”? Isn’t that from the Farmer In The Dell? I forgot all about it, but the minute I saw your title, so funny, I began to singsong the tune in my mind. Great slice, & like Elsie, I keep cream cheese for a long time, but not opened. It’ll be moldy if not okay. Thanks for the great slice from the frig!
Yes, I got the title from the farmer in the dell! š
That is the story of most food in my refrigerator. I should just apologize when I buy it.
It is strange how we can have such plans for things and then the unexpected comes up and changes our path. It’s not that you are off track, just that you had to take a detour for a bit.
Glad to see you are back this year!
Made me chuckle. I have friends for your cream cheese in my refrigerator.
I remember reading of the death of your friend, and since I, too, have been dealing with an unexpected death, I ‘feel’ your poem. Metaphorically speaking, my cream cheese stands alone too.
It’s true, life happens and plans are suddenly changed. Those red velvet cupcakes sound good though!
Your poem really struck a chord with me!!! I am famous for going through the grocery store and selecting various items, all with good intentions. I wish I enjoyed cooking and baking. I am sure my family would like this too. But, I do not enjoy the kitchen. I have had my share spoiled food to prove it!
I was drawn in by your title and I wasn’t disappointed. Can’t wait to read more.
It feels so good to know that other people have trouble keeping up with the cream cheese of life!
Very creative. I love the internal dialogue. We often speak to the food we love. I enjoyed this post.
I love this piece and the creative way that you speak to this neglected purchase. The perfect reminder that writers find inspiration in surprising places. I will have to peer into the depths of my refrigerator. ~ Theresa
What an incredible way to communicate the way life can sweep us up (for good or bad)–through cream cheese! I am sorry for the unexpected death. I am amazed at the way you wove humor and serious ideas together. So glad to read your posts again this year!
This definitely gave me a chuckle, thank you for sharing!
All the comments sum up this post really well, YOU ROCK JEE YOUNG! What a creative post… Life just happens like that, and I am so happy to be a part of yours.
Thanks Melody!!!! I’m glad you are part of my life as well!
