the cream cheese stands alone
i bought you over two weeks ago
excited to find you in a shelf in costco
imagining the possibilities:
whipping up a batch of cream cheese frosting for my red velvet cupcakes
so wanting to be eaten
yet, three weeks have passed, and you are in the same spot
a little bit older, closer to becoming full of mold
life happened
an unexpected death, a proposal, and new responsibilities
and you remain alone and untouched

Awhile ago (a long while ago) I thought that the expiration date on the bottom of the cream cheese package meant that it would stay good ’til that date even if it were opened. One call to Philadelphia later, I found out it’s only guaranteed for 10 days after opening. That being said, customer service treated me graciously and I’ve never made that mistake again.

Yes, there are a few Costco’s here in Seoul. It’s a bit more expensive then in the states, but totally worth it!!!

Too funny! I must confess, I buy it up when it is on sale in December but don’t use it until months later. It always looks and tastes okay, but it was unopened. So give it a chance.

In my house, I am infamous for buying items I fantasize whipping up delicious things with, but life seems to happen a lot to me; these products are often left in the fridge to stand alone : /

Are you going from the old rhyme “the cheese stands along”? Isn’t that from the Farmer In The Dell? I forgot all about it, but the minute I saw your title, so funny, I began to singsong the tune in my mind. Great slice, & like Elsie, I keep cream cheese for a long time, but not opened. It’ll be moldy if not okay. Thanks for the great slice from the frig!

That is the story of most food in my refrigerator. I should just apologize when I buy it.
It is strange how we can have such plans for things and then the unexpected comes up and changes our path. It’s not that you are off track, just that you had to take a detour for a bit.

I remember reading of the death of your friend, and since I, too, have been dealing with an unexpected death, I ‘feel’ your poem. Metaphorically speaking, my cream cheese stands alone too.
It’s true, life happens and plans are suddenly changed. Those red velvet cupcakes sound good though!
Your poem really struck a chord with me!!! I am famous for going through the grocery store and selecting various items, all with good intentions. I wish I enjoyed cooking and baking. I am sure my family would like this too. But, I do not enjoy the kitchen. I have had my share spoiled food to prove it!
